Scott Billings As a design writer, journalist and photographer who spends most of the day writing about visual culture, it is sometimes frustrating that I am singularly incapable of drawing or representing anything visual by hand. So for me, photography is a wonderful reprieve, allowing me to explore and create images without putting pen to paper. I have been taking photographs, on and off, for years, but in the last five years or so I have started to approach my efforts more seriously and with greater commitment. My introduction to using a camera and making images came during my Communications Studies degree in the early 1990s, when prints were still created in the university darkrooms. More recently, I have honed my understanding of the technical aspects of using a DSLR camera through self-instruction and practice. To develop the creative side of my photography I have also completed a number of courses with the Oxford School of Photography. I think that once the photo bug bites it starts to tighten its grip, creatively, practically and intellectually. More and more now I think about seeking and creating images, spending at least a little time most days considering the pictures I have made so far, as well as those made by other photographers. Alongside music and writing, for me photography is a vital creative outlet. | ||
